Our Ministers

Doug Craig

I have been fortunate to have already spent 36 years with my life partner Milo. We have 2 sons Jordan and Eden. My studies for ministry began in 1983 at St. Andrew’s College in Saskatoon, followed by 2 years at McGill University in Montreal. My undergraduate degree is in education. I graduated in 1986 and began work in my first church, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Flin Flon, Manitoba. I have also worked in churches in Portage la Prairie and North Battleford in the Presbyterian Church. After Milo graduated from St. Andrews with a Masters of Theological Studies we worked together in a team ministry in the United Church. We served as a team, in a 6 point pastoral charge, in south west Manitoba, from Goodlands to Pierson, called the “Cornerstone Pastoral Charge”. Since then I have served in United Churches in Lloydminster, Belmont/Baldur and Morden/Darlingford. Recently Milo and I completed 4 great years of  team ministry at St. Andrews, Yorkton.

Ministry for me is building a strong community of faith, one person at a time. It is stimulating worship; challenging study and reaching out to impact our society. Ministry is “being there” for another in the challenges that come with life. Ministry is welcoming a fellow searcher.

I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the life of Wesley United Church.

I have been an active volunteer in the church all my adult life and for many years saw that as ‘my ministry’. Will and I raised three children while I worked in the health care field and he worked in the steel industry before opening his own business in 1994.

In 2002 I discerned a call to paid accountable ministry and was appointed to Wesley in January of 2004 as a “Lay Pastoral Minister in Training“. This was a field based program through the United Theological College at McGill University in Montreal. I completed the program in Montreal in 2006 and was formally recognized in 2007 by Saskatchewan Conference.

What drew me to Wesley was their openness to change and to trying new things along with the challenge of helping the congregation find ways to invite and truly welcome new people, especially young families and youth, into the congregation. I understand ministry to be about bringing a faith perspective to our daily lives, about encouraging others to explore their faith, seek justice for the world and themselves, to offer our gifts and skills to the church and the wider world and to be open to experiencing that which we call ‘God’ in our everyday lives. Together we will work to bring about the kind of world that Jesus talked proclaimed.

I have a passion for exploring biblical texts in light of new learnings and to offering Christian development opportunities for all ages. In recent years my theology has been shaped by the work of John Spong, Marcus Borg, Dom Crossan, Gretta Vosper and other theologians on the cutting edge. It is an honour and a privilege to be in ministry with the faithful people of Wesley United Church.
